My son recently turned three years old, and I’ve noticed how quickly his abilities have developed. He can move a small stool, climb onto window sills, open balcony doors, and eagerly look outside to explore the world around him.
As parents, it’s exciting to watch our children become more independent. At the same time, it also means paying closer attention to safety at home.
For families living on the third floor, fourth floor, or higher, windows and balconies often present a greater risk than stairs.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Mistake 1: Window screens are not fall protection
Window screens are designed to keep insects out, not to support the weight of a child.
Most screens can be pushed out or damaged with relatively little force and should never be relied upon as a safety barrier.
Mistake 2: Balcony safety nets are not load-bearing
Many parents install safety nets on balcony railings. These nets can help prevent children from reaching through the railing gaps and can stop toys from falling.
However, they are not designed to support weight and should not be considered a fall-prevention system.
Mistake 3: Avoid placing furniture near windows
Chairs, stools, shelves, and storage boxes can quickly become climbing tools for curious children.
Whenever possible, keep climbable furniture away from windows and balcony doors.
Recommended Safety Solutions
1. Window Restrictors
Window restrictors are especially useful for the tilt-and-turn windows commonly found in Germany.
They limit how far a window can be opened, reducing the risk of children climbing through an open window.
Benefits:
- Affordable
- Easy to install
- Prevent children from opening windows fully
- Allow normal ventilation
2. Balcony Safety Nets
If balcony railings have wide gaps, a safety net can provide additional protection.
Its main purposes are:
- Preventing children from squeezing through railings
- Preventing toys from falling
- Providing extra protection for pets
Keep in mind that safety nets are not load-bearing safety devices.
3. Window Safety Bars
For low windows or homes with particularly active climbers, window safety bars can provide an additional layer of protection.
Unlike safety nets, they are securely fixed to the wall or window frame and offer a more robust physical barrier.
What We Do at Home
Our son is now three years old and very active. To improve safety, we have adopted several measures:
- No climbable furniture near windows

- Safety net on the balcony railing
- Adult supervision whenever the child is on the balcony
