14 Toys and Indoor Activities to Keep Kids Busy During Summer Heatwaves

It’s 10 a.m., and the temperature outside has already reached 34°C.

Breakfast ended less than thirty minutes ago, and the questions have already started:

“Mom, I’m bored.”

“Mom, will you play with me?”

“Mom, can we go outside?”

For many parents, summer holidays can feel endless, especially when it’s too hot to spend much time outdoors.

As a mom of a three-year-old boy, I’ve been through this myself. After trying all kinds of activities during last summer’s break, I discovered a handful of toys and simple games that kept my son entertained for hours while staying cool at home.

If you’re looking for screen-free ideas that actually work, these are the toys and activities I would recommend most.

Category 1: Water Toys

If I could only buy one type of toy for summer, I would choose water toys without hesitation. Most children are naturally drawn to water, and water play tends to keep them engaged much longer than many other activities.

Let’s be honest: what child can resist a puddle? Give kids a little water and they’ll immediately find ways to play with it. That’s why turning your backyard, patio, or even a balcony into a mini water playground can be a lifesaver during hot summer days.

1. Water Table

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ My Top Recommendation

Recommended age: 1–5 years

Price range: €60–180

Why I like it:

  • Suitable for balconies and patios
  • Great for playing with friends
  • Can be used for several years

A water table doesn’t take up much space and can easily be stored away after summer. Most children can enjoy it from toddlerhood all the way through their preschool years.

Whether playing alone or with friends, a water table is one of the best summer toys I’ve ever bought. Many children can stay entertained for hours.

2. Splash Pad

Recommended age: 1–7 years

Splash pads have become incredibly popular with families. Simply connect a garden hose and let the fun begin.

We bought one for our son, and he can easily spend an hour running around in it. He often adds toy cars, animals, and boats, turning it into all sorts of imaginative pretend-play adventures.

The shallow pool in the middle is his favorite spot. He loves lying there and pretending he’s swimming.

Mom’s experience:

On especially hot days, I simply let him play in his swim trunks. After running around for a while, he’ll often lie down in the water and continue his “swimming practice.” It’s not unusual for him to stay entertained for over an hour.

3. Water Play Canal System

Recommended age: 3–7 years

Water canal systems are a staple in many German families and one of our most frequently used outdoor toys during summer.

My son loves placing boats, animals, and small figures into the canals and creating rescue missions and adventure stories. Every day becomes a new game.

Tip:

It’s worth investing in a quality brand. Cheaper versions often leak where the sections connect, which can be frustrating during play.

Benefits:

  • Doesn’t require much space
  • Offers endless play possibilities
  • Kids can control water flow, operate locks, and guide boats through the canals

Mom’s experience:

This is one of our most-used summer toys. We’ve owned it for nearly a year, and my son still asks to play with it almost every day after preschool.

Category 2: Indoor Toys

These toys are perfect for any season. Whether it’s a summer heatwave, a week of rain, or a cold winter afternoon, they keep children entertained indoors.

When temperatures climb above 35°C or the weather keeps everyone stuck inside, these toys can be absolute lifesavers.

4. Kinetic Sand

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Rainy-Day Essential

What child doesn’t love playing with sand?

The problem is that outdoor sandboxes aren’t always an option when it’s too hot, raining, or freezing outside.

My favorite setup includes:

  • 2.5 kg of high-quality natural-colored kinetic sand
  • A few packs of colored sand for mixing and decorating
  • A large basin or storage container
  • The same sand toys your child normally uses outdoors

One of the biggest advantages of kinetic sand is that it sticks together instead of spreading everywhere like regular sand.

Kids can build cakes, ice cream creations, castles, and all sorts of imaginative projects while staying comfortably indoors.

Mom’s experience:

This is one of our most-used rainy-day toys. Unlike regular sand, it doesn’t end up all over the house, and cleanup is surprisingly easy.

5. Art Supplies for Little Artists

Let your child paint their own colorful summer!

One thing I love about summer is that messy art activities are much easier to clean up than they are in winter.

My recommendations:

  • Washable finger paints
  • A large roll of drawing paper
  • An old bedsheet or tablecloth underneath

For toddlers, bigger is often better. Instead of giving them a small sheet of paper, let them spread out on a long paper roll and create freely.

A 15-meter paper roll can last for months and later be used for birthday decorations, holiday crafts, gift wrapping, or homemade banners.

One of our favorite activities:

  • Roll the paper out on the patio or lawn
  • Add a few blobs of paint
  • Drive toy cars through the paint
  • Let dinosaurs stomp across it
  • Use leaves for nature prints
  • Make barefoot footprints

Many three-year-olds enjoy this much more than traditional painting with brushes.

Mom’s tip:

At this age, the goal isn’t creating beautiful artwork. The real value comes from sensory play, creativity, concentration, and exploring colors and textures.

6. Bubble Machine

⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Low-Effort Parent Favorite

For children between two and four years old, bubble machines can feel almost magical.

Many kids will happily run, jump, and chase bubbles for half an hour or more. They’re also great for playdates and group activities.

Mom’s experience:

This is one of the easiest toys for parents. Turn it on, and the entertainment starts automatically. My son can spend ages chasing bubbles and burning off energy. Best of all, it’s fun all year round, not just during summer.

Category 3: Indoor Toys for Staying Cool

When it’s simply too hot to spend much time outdoors, indoor toys become essential. These toys encourage imagination, independent play, and creative thinking while helping children stay comfortably indoors.

7. Kids’ Tipi Tent

A tipi tent can instantly turn a living room into a cozy little adventure camp.

Children can use it for:

  • Reading books
  • Pretend play
  • Playing with stuffed animals
  • Taking a nap
  • Having their own quiet space

On hot summer days, many children enjoy having a small space they can call their own. One day it might be a castle, the next day a pirate ship, and the day after that a veterinary clinic for stuffed animals.

8. Play Sofa

Play sofas have become extremely popular with families in recent years.

The soft foam pieces can be rearranged endlessly to create:

  • Forts
  • Slides
  • Tunnels
  • Playhouses
  • Obstacle courses

Because children can build something different every day, a play sofa often remains interesting for years.

It’s also a great way for kids to stay active and burn energy indoors when the weather is too hot or rainy.

9. Magnetic Tiles

Magnetic tiles are one of those rare toys that can grow with a child.

They help develop:

  • Fine motor skills
  • Spatial awareness
  • Creativity
  • Problem-solving skills

One of the most beautiful things about magnetic tiles is how sunlight shines through the colorful pieces, creating fascinating patterns and colors around the room.

The building possibilities are almost endless:

  • Flat mosaics
  • Houses
  • Parking garages
  • Castles
  • Ball runs
  • Entire imaginary worlds

Children of different ages can all find ways to enjoy them.

Mom’s experience:

At first, my son only built simple houses. Now he creates parking garages for toy cars, dinosaur enclosures, and increasingly complex structures. It’s one of those toys that evolves as children grow.

Category 4: Energy-Burning Indoor Toys

Many parents notice the same pattern: the more active children are during the day, the better they sleep at night.

But when it’s 35°C outside or raining all day, finding ways to burn energy indoors can be challenging.

These toys are excellent for keeping active kids moving.

10. Balance Stepping Stones

Balance stones are one of my favorite toys for active children.

Simply placing a few stones around the living room can instantly create an exciting obstacle course.

For even more fun, combine them with:

  • Chairs
  • Tables
  • Sofa cushions
  • Building blocks
  • Play sofas

Suddenly the living room becomes an adventure course where children can jump, balance, and climb from one challenge to the next.

Don’t be surprised when they ask, “Can we do it again?”

11. Pikler Triangle

The Pikler Triangle is based on the educational philosophy of Hungarian pediatrician Emmi Pikler.

It encourages children to explore movement at their own pace while developing:

  • Balance
  • Coordination
  • Body control
  • Confidence

We don’t own one ourselves because our home is relatively small, but I’ve seen them in many daycare centers, playgroups, and family activity spaces.

They’re especially suitable for children between one and four years old.

12. Mini Trampoline

When it’s too hot or rainy to play outside, a mini trampoline can be a fantastic way to help children stay active.

Kids can:

  • Jump
  • Bounce
  • Create games
  • Build movement challenges

Regular jumping helps develop coordination, balance, and body awareness.

For energetic children, a mini trampoline can provide a surprisingly effective indoor workout while still feeling like pure fun.

Category 5: Small Cooling Essentials

Not every summer purchase needs to be a large toy. Sometimes the simplest items can make hot days much more comfortable and enjoyable for children.

13. Mini USB Fan

During heatwaves, many families wish they had air conditioning. Since air conditioning is still relatively uncommon in many homes, a small USB fan can be a useful alternative.

Most mini fans are:

  • Lightweight
  • Foldable
  • Rechargeable
  • Easy for children to use

Kids can hold them in their hands, wear them around their necks, or place them on a table while playing.

For children who dislike hot weather, these fans often provide both comfort and a sense of novelty.

Mom’s experience:

My son loves running around the house carrying his mini fan. I’m not sure it actually cools him down very much, but it definitely keeps him entertained.

[amazon_product asin="B0BRV616Z5"]

14. Mist Fan

A mist fan combines a small USB fan with a built-in water reservoir.

In addition to airflow, it creates a fine cooling mist, which can feel especially refreshing on hot summer days.

Benefits:

  • Fan and misting function in one device
  • Compact and portable
  • Great for patios, gardens, and day trips
  • Fun and interesting for children

Most models include a small water tank of around 50 ml that can easily be refilled throughout the day.

Mom’s experience:

The cooling effect is naturally limited, but children usually find the misting feature fascinating. The combination of airflow and water makes it much more exciting than a standard fan, and many kids enjoy playing with it for quite a while.

Category 6: These Toys Are Great – But What If You Don’t Want to Buy Anything New?

Not every family wants to keep buying new toys. And sometimes, the simplest activities turn out to be the most exciting.

These ideas cost little to nothing but can keep children happily occupied for surprisingly long periods of time.

1. Ice Treasure Hunt

Recommended age: 2–8 years

You’ll need:

  • Small toy animals
  • Toy cars
  • Mini figures
  • A food container
  • Water

How to play:

The night before, place a few small toys inside a container, fill it with water, and freeze it overnight.

The next day, you’ll have a giant block of ice with hidden treasures trapped inside.

Additional tools:

  • Warm water
  • A pipette or dropper
  • Spray bottle
  • Spoon
  • Small plastic hammer

Children can then figure out how to rescue the animals and toys from the ice.

Mom’s experience:

My son loves rescue missions. Whether he’s saving dinosaurs or toy cars, he can stay focused on this activity for over half an hour. The hotter the weather, the more exciting this game becomes.

2. Water Play Tub

Recommended age: 1–5 years

You’ll need:

  • A large basin or storage container
  • A few inches of water
  • Plastic cups
  • Funnels
  • Spoons
  • Small boats or toy animals

How to play:

Children often don’t need complicated toys.

A container of water and a few simple tools can be enough.

They can:

  • Pour water
  • Scoop water
  • Transfer water between containers
  • Wash toy animals
  • Float boats

For toddlers, these simple activities are already a complete game.

On a balcony, patio, or in the backyard, many children can happily play this way for one or two hours.

3. Bubble Car Wash

Recommended age: 2–6 years

You’ll need:

  • Mild shampoo or soapy water
  • A bowl
  • An old toothbrush
  • A sponge
  • Toy vehicles

How to play:

Create lots of foam and tell your child:

“These cars are very dirty and need to be washed!”

Most children immediately jump into the role of car wash manager.

They can:

  • Wash the cars
  • Scrub the wheels
  • Rinse them
  • Leave them to dry

Construction vehicles, tractors, and fire trucks often make the activity even more exciting.

As a bonus, children practice fine motor skills while playing.

4. Cardboard Playhouse

Recommended age: 2–8 years

You’ll need:

  • Large cardboard boxes
  • Shipping boxes
  • Markers
  • Stickers
  • Tape

How to play:

Cut doors and windows into the box.

Then let your child’s imagination take over.

They can:

  • Draw curtains
  • Design a doorbell
  • Create a garden
  • Decorate with stickers
  • Name their house
  • Move stuffed animals inside

Many children end up loving the cardboard box even more than the toy that originally came in it.

A large cardboard playhouse can remain entertaining for days.

5. Balcony or Backyard Picnic

Recommended age: 1–8 years

You’ll need:

  • A picnic blanket
  • Fruit
  • Snacks
  • Stuffed animals
  • Picture books

How to play:

Sometimes children aren’t excited about what they’re eating—they’re excited about where they’re eating it.

Move lunch outside to the balcony, patio, or backyard.

Invite some special guests:

  • Teddy bears
  • Dinosaurs
  • Dolls

Add a few simple activities:

  • Reading books
  • Eating fruit
  • Blowing bubbles
  • Talking together

Many picky eaters suddenly become much more interested in food when mealtime feels like an adventure.

And for parents, the preparation couldn’t be easier.

After more than two years of parenting, I’ve learned that children don’t necessarily need more expensive toys.

Sometimes a cardboard box, a tub of water, or a block of ice can provide an entire afternoon of entertainment.

What truly captures a child’s attention isn’t the toy itself—it’s the opportunity to explore, imagine, and discover.

My Three-Year-Old Son’s Current Top 5 Favorites

  1. Water Play Canal System
  2. Splash Pad
  3. Kinetic Sand
  4. Magnetic Tiles
  5. Bubble Machine

This ranking is based entirely on our family’s personal experience over the past few months and may not reflect every child’s preferences.

Looking back, I’ve realized that no single toy can magically save summer break.

What really helps is creating an environment where children can explore independently, use their imagination, and return to the same activities again and again.

If I could only choose four items, I would pick:

  • A water table for summer
  • A bubble machine for outdoor fun
  • Kinetic sand for year-round play
  • Magnetic tiles for long-term creativity

These toys remain useful for years and work just as well on hot summer days as they do during rainy afternoons or cold winter weekends.

I hope these ideas help make your preschool summer break a little easier—and don’t forget to leave some time to recharge for yourself as well.
